Good morning Burleigh Heads.
Welcome to the very first issue.
This week, a P-plater was caught driving through Burleigh at more than double the legal alcohol limit with six passengers onboard. A $30 million penthouse sale rewrote the Queensland record books, and a Short Street home became Burleigh's most expensive house sale to date.
The tram extension is nearly finished, some longtime locals are heading north to escape the roadworks, and a hidden laneway restaurant has people talking.
Let's get into it.

CRIME
P-Plater Blows .134 with Six Passengers - In Burleigh Heads

A 20-year-old Currumbin Waters driver was caught in Burleigh Heads with a blood alcohol reading of .134 while carrying six passengers. That's more than double the legal limit, and well over the zero-alcohol rule for P-platers.
Police handed out six drink-driving charges during the operation. A timely reminder if you're heading out around the coast on a busy weekend.
Burleigh's Beachfront Is Getting a Major Overhaul

Big changes could be coming to the Burleigh foreshore, with plans for a rebuilt seawall, wider beachfront walkway, new picnic areas, and a possible children's lagoon or upgraded playground.
The parking stays, but locals are still split on what should happen next. With consultation now closed, the conversation is far from over.

They Are Leaving: Long-Term Locals Heading North

Some longtime Burleigh locals are packing up and moving to Paradise Point, with ongoing roadworks, traffic, and years of light rail construction often cited as the tipping point.
It's a bit of a strange twist. The project designed to improve connections across the Gold Coast has, for some residents, become the reason to leave.
The good news? The finish line is finally close. Tram testing is expected to start in late June, with passenger services set to begin by the end of July. Whether those who left decide to come back is another story.
Small, lumpy and pretty ordinary.

A weak 1–1.5ft north-northwest windswell is keeping conditions average at best. If you’re chasing a wave, your best bet is a sheltered sandbank out of the northwest wind, preferably before high tide around 9:30am.
Safety reminder: Volunteer patrols at Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC wrapped up for the season at the end of May. Council lifeguards are still on duty year-round, but if you’re swimming outside the flags, you’re on your own. Rips don’t take winter off.
It’s been a quiet week on the water, with no rescues or major incidents reported.
On the bright side, the club has secured $30,000 to upgrade rescue gear and fund lifesaving training, plus another $7,500 to help get more women and girls involved in frontline lifesaving roles.

DEBATE OF THE WEEK
The light rail is almost here - and real estate data suggests it has already driven long-term residents north to Paradise Point.
So: is the tram connecting Burleigh, or hollowing it out?
We are not asking whether the light rail is a good idea. We are asking whether the cost - years of construction chaos, demographic disruption, and the sense that the suburb's character is shifting - was worth it for the people who actually live here.
Hit reply and let us know what you think.
LEGEND OF THE WEEK:
This week's nod goes to the volunteers at Walk With Us, who quietly show up every week to prepare and serve a hot dinner to around 50 food-insecure people right here in Burleigh Heads.
In the same week that The Esplanade set a $30 million property record, a self-funded not-for-profit is making sure the most vulnerable people in the suburb get a meal. No fuss, no fanfare - just good people doing necessary work.
A mention also to Burleigh Heads Anglican Church, whose Goodwill Gardens project collects food scraps, regenerates soil, grows fresh produce, and directs the output to food relief for homeless residents and families in crisis. Working with local group Seed the Ground, they have built something genuinely useful. Good on them.
